What's the differences between Posts and Roles?

- Posts are HR terminology (think Jobs, Job Posts, Job Title) and posts contain contract details, finance records and other HR related information.
- Roles are purely for rota requirements. Every shift on the rota has a role, every person has a role (configured in their Post Contract) and only staff with the appropriate role can work the shifts.
Examples of Posts vs Roles;
In a GP-based example Posts would be;
- Sessional GP
- Salaried GP
- Locum GP
- Agency GP
Role(s) would be;
- GP
In this example every post outlined would have different contract details (contracted hours vs zero hours, different pay rates, different leave allowances) but they would ALL have the Role of GP in their contracts, meaning that any one of them could go into GP shifts in the rota.
Roles can be more specific if, for example, for some shifts you do need to make sure a Salaried GP is in the shift. In that instance, you could have a GP and a Salaried GP Role. The GP role would be assigned to Sessional, Locum and Agency GP Posts, whilst Salaried GPs have a role of Salaried GP.
Posts and Roles can be setup to match each other completely, but this is not recommended as often it will mean that the roles on the shifts are very specific and beyond the needs of the actual shift requirements.For example, if you set up roles for each kind of GP, you will be restricted as to which GPs can go into Agency GP (role) sessions - when in reality the service just needs a GP.
